Margarita is 14yrs old and comes to PH with her bonded sister Tequila.

They were adopted thru PugHearts as puppies 14yrs ago, and come back to us due to the death of their owner.

These girls have been loved and doted on their entire lives, and they would love nothing more than finding a place to live out their retirement years!

Both girls are healthy and after dentals, are ready to go.

They are both visually impaired due to dry eye and will need to have drops for life.

The girls are also potty & crate trained and sleep together in their crate.

Margarita is the softer of the two, the more gentle and loving.

The girl who loves her person and wants to be by their side at all times.

She is so fine, greeting me with kisses and conversation after work.

Loves food and treats and being outside!!

Tequila is the risk taker!

She is more outgoing, will take the others food if not watching, wants to be the center of attention - she is so funny!!

She also loves being outside!!

These girls must be adopted together - But they are so wonderful and easy and true southern ladies!

Please consider taking these seniors - they will be your best friends!

paw icon

With special needs

Ophelia comes to PugHearts from the Rio Grande valley.

She is a 8ough treatment prior to adoption.

From Ophelia's foster: Ophelia is a Velcro pug, very energetic and happy.

She loves toys, Nyla bones and plush toys, but unfortunately she has mega esophagus which can be irritated by over enthusiastic play or stress.

She loves tummy and chest rubs and she will let you know if you have not fulfilled her pet/scratch quota by pawing at your hand.

She gives kisses and is very excited most of the time.

Which has been alittle worrisome during her heart worm treatment.

The mega esophagus is manageable with elevated food and rest 20-30 mins after feeding.

Ophelia is a delightful little girl that adds a bright spot to everyday.

Medical hold and then pending adoption with his foster Mom.

Comet is an 8 yr. old male that was originally found hiding behind a dumpster in the cold.

Sadly, he returns to PugHearts after 6 years adopted.

What a senior love bug!

Comet is back with PugHearts after an owner surrender situation through no fault of his own.

Comet loves other dogs but also loves to lounge around.

He is 8 years young, is house trained and kennel trained.

He doesn’t bark but has the cutest woo woo sound when he gets excited.

What gets him excited?

Food!

Comet loves everybody and his tongue leads the way.

He is on 25 mg of Benadryl for life as he’s had some small masses removed that had cancer in them.

He is doing fantastic and is healthy.

He has a great personality and will melt your heart the moment you meet him.

With special needs

Lila is a 9 yr old female that comes to PugHearts after being found wandering all alone.

She appears to have some problems with her back legs and is being monitored by the vet.

Lila is, happily, heartworm negative.

From Lila's foster: Meet Lila - our gorgeous Lila!!

She is a very happy, healthy 9 yr old that loves to play and cuddle and run - everywhere she goes!!

Lila is a special needs pug that has some neurological issues with her back legs.

We are not sure if this is due to an injury or birth - be please do not let this deter you from adopting her!!

She does not let this slow her down one bit!!

The biggest issue is elimination, as she is not always aware of pooping.

Lila does squat to urinate, but then hops about 3ft while going.

If she is leashed and you hold her, she will finish then move on.

She will also stand up when asked!

This sweet girl is a treasure and we are hoping that someone will give her a chance at a family - she deserves her own family and loves with her whole heart!

Darby was part of a bonded pair - Darby and Drake.

Originally they came into our rescue two years ago and were adopted.

They were surrendered back to us recently thru no fault of their own.

Volunteers flew to retrieve these babies to get them back to us!

Now she is alone at 10 yrs old.

Now the good stuff!

She loves her humans and follow us everywhere and will give you all of her love.

She is house trained, but needs to be taken out for potty breaks on a regular basis.

She eats everything, even her vegetables.

Darby can be alpha at times but easily correctable and she loves chew toys and will collect them in her crate.

Tessa (6132)
paw icon

Female

paw icon

1 years old

paw icon

With special needs

MEDICAL HOLD Tessa came to PugHearts from San Antonio back in November as a 7 week old puppy with a prolapsed rectum.

A prolapse will typically occur in puppies that haven’t been properly dewormed, causing severe diarrhea.

A purse string was put in by the vet in San Antonio prior to her transport to Houston.

What is a purse string?

Think of it as a drawstring in her rectum to hold her insides in, similar to holding the contents of a bag in place.

This is so important because the longer that the bowls are out, the more necrotic the tissue becomes.

The purse string stayed in for 2 weeks and less than 48 hours after it was out, Tessa prolapsed again.

She was rushed back to our vet to have an additional purse string.

This is when we assumed the problem was bigger than we thought and it was discovered that Tessa has no muscle tone in her rectum.

This purse string stayed in for 3 weeks, and this time she prolapsed less than 24 hours from removal.

I became quite versed in pushing her colon back inside her body every time she prolapsed, until her emergency surgery was performed the following day.

Dr. Hendrix performed a Coloplexy on Tessa, essentially pulling and tacking the colon to the abdominal wall and leaving no room for an additional prolapse to occur.

Since this surgery, we have been finding out all the additional problems Tessa has, and assume she born with this defect.

She has a total collapse of the 7th vertebrae leading into her pelvis causing nerve damage to the colon, which also gives her a funny gait and a spastic neurogenic colon.

She has the urge to poop all the time, and will posture constantly with some, little or nothing coming out.

It ends up on her, the other dogs, me and the wall on occasion.

She has to have her anal glands manually expressed on a weekly basis because her body can’t do it.

She will never be able to jump on and off the furniture or use stairs.

There’s mornings that I want to scream and cry while I’m scrubbing poop, but then I see her and everything is worth it.

We’ve treated her with prednisone and metronidazole to no avail, and we currently have her on Tylan which has helped the consistency be more formed.

She is on a strict diet of GI high energy wet food and Biome If Tessa hadn’t found her way to PugHearts, she would not be here.

There is no information on treating this condition because most dogs would have died or been euthanized.

PugHearts is fighting for Tessa and we are doing everything that we can to help her.

It’s not cheap, Her dog food is almost $80 a bag, but this little baby deserves the best.

SLPH accepts manufacturers coupons for the Hill’s Science Diet food, if you’d like to donate those at the clinic.

I had $15 worth today!

Today Tessa had her last booster.

At this point, most puppies would be ready for adoption.

Tessa is not.

We’ve concluded that Tessa might not ever be adoptable, but we also aren’t calling her hospice.

It’s unknown what Tessa might have to tackle next and with Pughearts and me as her foster, we will be ready to take on anything, but it’s not a burden we want future adopters to have to face.

Tessa is my baby.

She is spoiled rotten just like she’s suppose to be.

She spends the majority of her day being held or in my lap, and sleeps every night curled around my neck.

Please consider donating to Tessa’s care.

She deserves the world and PugHearts is going to give it to her

Grayson (6397)
paw icon

Male

paw icon

6 years old

paw icon

With special needs

I first found out about Grayson from a cryptic message at the end of October.

All it said was that there is an extremely sick Frenchie in a shelter scheduled for euthanasia today that we were trying to pull him out and whether I would foster to which I said of course.

It was exactly 3 days later when I got a call from the director of the rescue.

Grayson made it to our vet and his evaluation was not good.

He had a left sided failure caused by a genetic heart issue complicated by heartworms, a completely preventable condition, and he was given a week to live.

I felt like I couldn’t breathe but I also knew this dog needed to come here.

I didn’t sleep that night.

I felt like there had to be more I could do for this dog and then it hit me – Grayson is dying and he never got to experience anything!

clearly, we will do a bucket list for him.

We took him to the beach where he tried to chase the seagulls even though he could barely walk, to a ranch where he got kissed by a wild pony, on a convertible ride to get a puppachino, we cooked him steak, he met and peed on a giant tortoise, had a professional photoshoot and visited Bayou Bend Gardens.

Before we knew it, a week turned into two, then three and before we knew it he had people overseas reaching out about his story.

People were asking about heartworms and he was making a difference.

Just as we began hoping Grayson may celebrate New Year with us, an upper respiratory infection hit him with an incredible strength.

For two weeks we fought as hard as we could for him hoping his appetite would pick back up knowing well this may be it.

Grayson came to us beyond starved and he could barely pick up his tummy filled with fluid caused by his heart failure – if he ever got to the point where he couldn’t walk, we knew it would be unfair to keep it going.

And then he finally had a good day, and one after that, he got excited about meal times and I felt like I could breathe again.

As of today, Grayson got to eat Turkey on Thanksgiving and Christmas both, he celebrated Mother's and Father's day, he has met endless friends and lived a life he should have had from the start.

None of this changes the fact that his condition is terminal.

When his symptoms become severe enough and he can no longer enjoy his life, we will be there to hold him as he crosses over.

But it will not be today.

This is a story of a rescue taking in a dog that will never make it out.

A dog that never stood a chance but a dog whose life has been turned around because the rescue stepped in.

His story could have ended in that shelter but it did not.

Living with Grayson for the past 2 months has taught us more than I would have ever thought a dog could.

Grayson was abused and he will pay the ultimate price yet he is not bitter at all, the opposite in fact.

He loves people and wants to be loved on all day long.

He has learned his new name within days and runs to us as fast as his body allows him to.

Having him here has made us to cherish every single day because we are not promised tomorrow.

He taught us to let go of our baggage and live in the now.

Your donations help not only dogs getting ready for adoptions but also dogs like Grayson, dogs that will live out the rest of their days in rescue.

We thank you for your support.

HOPICE!

Murray is a winky as he is missing his left eye.

He has IVDD (Intervertebral Disc Disease).

Murray also has a healed vertebral fracture, Spondylosis and hip dysplasia.

That being said, Murray has no idea that he should experience limitations with his activity.

He can and does do anything he wants.

He is on Rimadyl for pain and will remain on it throughout his life.

He is a sweet, loving cuddle bug.

Although Murray has his physical challenges they don’t stop him from doing anything he wants to.

He has been neutered and had his nares and soft palate done and is good to go.

He sleeps either on the couch or in a crate in the bedroom.

He uses doggie stairs well.

He loves treats and to play with toys.

He can be food aggressive so I either crate him or put him in another room to eat.

He is 90% potty trained.

He is sweet and likes to be loved on.

Since Callie joined us in April 2022, she has lost an impressive 9 pounds, been diagnosed with Cushing's, is receiving daily meds that have leveled out or eliminated the majority of her symptoms.

Those symptoms consisted of nearly constant panting, excessive hunger and thirst, poor hair coat, restlessness, skin irritations, weight gain, and pot bellied appearance.

She will needs these meds for life.

She continues to be the bossiest, most active pug here (saying a lot, considering the pair of puppy foster girls), with daily toy box raids.

Her now plush coat will keep her pretty and warm as we delve into a long deserved Texas winter.

She's the most interactive, funny foster to ever dawn my doorstep.

We welcome her antics as long as she wants to entertain us.

When we say any pug... Meet Miss Chocolate.

Her owner fell on hard times and initiated contact with us several months ago.

Many conversations and assurances later, owner was ready, and tearfully surrendered her very loved baby, knowing we could provide the needed care she could not.

Chocolate LOVES these cool mornings and scouting every single corner of the yard.

She has a voracious appetite, and does not object to, but holds no interest in her pug mates.

She is blind, but still hears some.

She is surprisingly inquisitive and mobile.

Naturally, some other age related ailments like arthritis have set in.

Chocolate also has several masses we will be addressing soon, and will update her medical/adoptability status as we learn it.

Chocolate is 15 pounds of confidence, hunger, curiosity, and opinions.

Chocolate's days may not be long, but will be filled with love, copious snacks, and the best veterinary care money can buy.

This Is Miss Chocolate, on May 4, 2023 she will be 20.

She came to me for her last days.

She had been only sleeping, going from bed to bed.

When she walked around, and around she would bump into things.

Discovered she has very limited vision and no hearing, but she is very acute.

She knows when I enter a room or open the front door.

The sweetest thing is she sleeps in our breakfast room not a cage.

And every morning around 6-6:30 she’s waiting for me to come to the gate and touch her.

When she came to me she wouldn’t let me hold her but about 3 minutes.

Now she will let me hold her about 20 minutes.

She is so sweet and stands under my feet and when walking by she makes a detour to walk over my feet and rubbing up against them The best thing is she never sat up like in the picture, which she has just started to do since Gramps has been here for a stay while Pam is recovering.

She never barks or cry’s unless I Would put her in her crate.

So she is never in her crate.

She doesn’t even answer me when I talk to her.

She’s my girl and a blessing to have her with me.

CAN YOU SEE THE SWEETNESS in her??

I bet you can.

Update… Avery is now 14 months old.

This little doll found found herself at PugHearts at only 11 weeks old due to changes in her family.

Avery spent three weeks at our clinic trying to find the underlying reasons for her stomach issues.

It was determined that Avery suffers from irritable bowel disorder (IBD) and as such as frequent bouts of diarrhea.

Avery still requires a special diet and puppy pads out at night for these flair ups.

But thanks to PugHearts, she is getting all the care she needs.

Avery is considered a special needs/medical foster at this time.

Foster Leo is 5 years old, devoted with all his existence to being with his people and never more than 3 inches away.

He is completely potty trained and never had a single accident in my home.

He does sleep in the kennel currently if that is your preference but based on his couch cuddles, I think he would make an excellent bed sleeper also.

Leo loves other dogs, kids, toys, treats, knows how to sit, has no toy or food aggression and even though he finishes his meals first, he never bothers the others in the room with him who are a lot slower eaters.

He does have separation anxiety so having a home where he is not left alone for long periods of time is a must but that and eye drops are the only accommodations this otherwise perfect stud muffin needs.

He will be ready at the end of August after his nares surgery and dental cleaning.

Archie (5 yrs) has had a rough start at life.

He was one of five that PugHearts took from a breeder who dumped them.

He lived in an outside pen his entire life and not treated nice by humans.

He is also the only one of the five rescued that was heartworm positive.

We got that taken care of and he did GREAT!

Archie is scared of his own shadow, cowers near humans and jumps at every little noise.

He does, however, get along with other dogs and has not shown any aggression.

UPDATE: Archie is learning to trust, but it takes time with him.

He needs to find a person that will allow him time and patience to show them how amazing this boy really is.

His foster mom is showering him with love, patience and a quiet place to decompress and observe other dogs and how they should be treated.

…and from the ashes, rose a phoenix.

To know Ash’s background, you wouldn’t blame him if he was bitter, surly, or even skittish.

But despite his past, Ash is one of the most loving and mild-mannered pugs I have ever met.

Due to his history and likely his heart worm diagnosis, he’s a tiny guy at only 16.8 lbs.

You’d be forgiven for thinking he was a puppy but, in fact, he is a mature 8 year old.

I like to think that for Ash, this is his opportunity to experience the joyous puppyhood he was deprived of.

Everything he experiences, he experiences with wonder; from a random treat here and there, walks around the neighborhood, and even chasing dragonflies in the back yard.

Like a puppy, he’s still working on some of the fundamentals such as potty training, but he’s demonstrating a real willingness to do what it takes to be a good boy and I have the upmost faith that he will be successful in this endeavor.

Ash is an absolute cuddle bug but not quite Velcro.

He will give you your space, if needed.

He’s scheduled for his neuter on September 12th and will have to undergo treatment for heart worms for a month or two following that.

After that, this little man will be absolutely ready to find his forever home, forever lap, and to live his second puppyhood to its fullest!

Lotus is a great 6 year old girl.

I’m still learning about what she likes.

Typical pug she loves to eat, be held, give kisses and steal my pillow at night.

Sadly it became apparent quickly that her ‘good’ eye has extremely limited vision.

But in typical pug fashion, that doesn’t bother her in the least.

She keeps up very well with the pack.

She squeaks when she whines and she also has a very unique bark.

She’s pretty awesome.

She will be with me for awhile, but once she kicks the heartworm's butt, she’ll be a great companion.

Please Welcome Apollo to PugHearts!

Apollo made his way from The Valley.

He’s a 5 year old Brindle French Bulldog.

Apollo really is such a sweet boy.

He is a true lover and so loyal to his people.

By his appearance I cannot imagine his life before PugHearts.

He is so skinny with patches of hair missing on his back and tail, presumably from fleas because some parts are raw.

His fur is thin and it’s obvious he’s been an outside only dog.

Apollo is also heartworm positive.

His fear of not getting enough food or another dog being mean to him is not all that surprising.

This poor boy had to fight for survival and now that he has a warm bed to sleep in and he gets 2 yummy meals a day, I’m hoping Apollo understands that he’s safe, he’s secure and he’s loved.

Apollo will need a patient and loving family, preferably as the only dog, that will love him and continue to show him he’s special.

Apollo shows no aggression to people, unless you consider massive amounts of kisses aggressive, and he is the best boy at house training and crate training.

He constantly wants to assert his dominance to other dogs, especially if he’s worried that he’s losing his food or might have to share my attention.

He loves relaxing in the dog bed chewing a nylabone, especially if he has me in his sights.

He doesn’t appear to have any anxiety when it comes to separation or being left alone.

Like most Frenchies he’s a little stubborn and hard headed, with a dash of OCD, but learning the best way to redirect him will alleviate most problems.

Apollo was recently neutered, and he had his nares, palate and saccules done as well.

I know Apollo has the perfect home out there waiting for him.

Hi y'all, Aunt Bea here.

I'm about 12 years old or so.

I don't remember much about my life before I came to PugHearts.

FoMo says I'm just a sweetheart, and I think that's a good thing.

I love giving kisses, and FoMo likes that.

I love my food, however, I can't seem to gain any weight.

We found out a couple months or so that I'm diabetic.

Not really sure what that is, but FoMo gives me a shot every time I eat.

I go sit by the back door when I need to go potty and FoMo says I'm a really good girl.

FoMo said I will most likely stay here for the rest of my life because I'm something called Hospice.

I really like it here, they kinda spoil me and I like that.

Well it's nap time, catch y'all's later.

Hi y'all, Chiquita here.

Im around 12 years old.

I'm a tiny, fat girl.

I'm very petite, as they call me.

I weigh about 10 pounds, but I am a little over weight for my size.

I came to PugHearts after being left at a shelter with injuries to both my eyes.

I had to have 1 eye removed and the other I don't see much out of.

I also had to have emergency surgery because I had a prolapsed vagina.

I'm feeling much better now.

We are still trying to get somethings taken care of, but FoMo and FoPa both say I'm showing my sweet little demanding personality just because I really love to be held and sit with people.

I don't think that it demanding.

I'm currently on medical hold, while we get some other medical issues worked out, so it will be a while before I'm ready for adoption.

Gabriel is a 10-year-old male, who spent his entire life in a puppy mill, where he was used and abused – until he came to PugHearts.

Not only was he deaf, but he also suffered from a fractured mandible and dental disease.

Nevertheless, he has no difficulty eating.

When he first came to PugHearts in November, he was absolutely terrified of humans.

Now, he LOVES to be petted and hugged.

He’s a Big Old Boy, but not fat, weighing around 27 pounds.

We lovingly call him BOB!!

Since he can’t hear, the name change doesn’t bother him.

He has learned to respond to hand signals and no longer jumps when approached/touched from behind.

He fit right in with the other animals in the household, including the cat.

He’s very good with children and enjoys meeting new people and animals.

He’s a very young 10 and is quite active and adorably vocal.

Walks a little wonky in the grass but is getting used to it.

Still working on potty training and he wears a belly band when inside.

Gabriel’s transformation has been unbelievable.

He is very affectionate and deserves to spend the next 10 years in a home where he will be loved.

She is severely vision impaired, came to PugHearts with a terrible bladder infection and very confused as to what is going on.

She is, miraculously, heartworm negative.

She will need a dental as soon as she is strong and healthy enough to have anesthesia.

This is the most amazing and wonderful Bonky Boy!

There just aren't words to describe how great he is.

He is a 7 year old owner surrender and I have no idea why, he's pretty much perfect!

His face is one of the most beautiful pug faces I've seen, the fur coloring on his forehead is amazing!

He is another one who has issues that could have been avoided.

He is blind due to dry eye that wasn't treated and he is positive for heartworms.

It's sad that both of these issue could have been prevented with proper care.

But my Bonky Boy is a very happy lad.

He loves to be close to me and jumps on the couch and settles in right next to me be before I know what's happening.

He is a huge bed hog though.

In an effort to be close to me he moves over every time I do and I wake up with my legs hanging off the side of the bed.

I don't let him sleep with me every night because I need a full night every once in a while.

Bonky won't be available for adoption until his heartworms are treated so it will probably be February or March before he's ready to find his new home.

Welcome!

PugHearts Dean aka Mr. Debonair Dean.

I initially picked him up from a wonderful couple that saved him.

Their pug was missing and decided to save him because the finder had him in the trunk of a car.

He was in bad shape and called PugHearts.

Good news is that they found their pug.

They loved him from the moment they saw him and was grateful to save this baby.

I decided I couldn't let him stay in the clinic and became his foster.

Dean is 4 years old and was he so happy he didn't even know where to go first.

Dean will have a long journey, we really don't know how he lived before coming to PugHearts.

Our vet is trying to pinpoint where the head tilt and imbalance are coming from.

They will try to rule out chronic inner ear infection or a brainstem issues.

He was fleas infested but we took care of that, he also has bald patches throughout his body and could use about 1 lb.

or 2.

He sleeps well in the crate and we're working on a potty routine.

He wants to thank everyone for their donations and send hugs and kisses to all.

Stay tuned for his care journey.

Please Welcome Malone to PugHearts!

Malone is a 4 year old owner surrender from The Valley.

His family surrendered him out of love when they didn’t think they could care for him adequately, and PugHearts gladly picked him up.

Malone is epileptic and the doctors had the family so worried and scared, which is sad, because caring for an epileptic dog is not scary.

He is on phenobarbital twice daily and has never had a seizure in his foster home, so we think it’s very controlled on meds.

He doesn’t take flea meds due to their ability to cause seizures but he is on monthly heartworm prevention.

He has a luxating patella causing a wonky gait but it doesn’t slow Malone down at all.

He don’t jump on or off the furniture but will use the stairs to get into bed if he has to.

Besides phenobarbital fir seizures, Malone is on a daily joint supplement.

This boy has so much personality stuffed into a 14 pound squishy body.

He talks.

He sometimes talks back too!

He plays dead when picked up…there’s a video of him on Facebook!

He only sleeps flat on his back too.

Malone loves playing with his foster siblings and is doing great at house training.

He is waiting on his neuter, which will help the marking.

Malone loves kids too.

Really, if you have a hand to pet and a lap to lay in, then you’re his favorite.

This boy may have special needs but he is going to make a lucky family the happiest ever!

Please welcome Thomas to PugHearts!

Thomas was picked up as a stray and brought to a local shelter, who called PugHearts after the required stray hold, and boy are we glad they did!

Thomas needs the love and medical care that only PugHearts can give.

He was suffering from Sarcoptic Mange, Flea Dermatitis, poor nutrition and heartworms.

Thomas also has a scar from a healing ulcer.

After spending a week at the vet to ensure he’s no longer contagious, Thomas made his way to his foster home and the better life he deserves.

We estimate that Thomas is 5 years old.

He will be neutered and have his needed breathing surgeries first, and then will be treated for heartworms.

He will always have a cloudy look to the damaged eye, but his vision appears to be just fine.

Thomas is the sweetest little guy.

He’s about 16 pounds, and will be at a healthy weight after gaining a pound or two.

Thomas is learning about toys and how to play with his foster siblings.

He enjoys always being at my feet and is an expert cuddler in the big bed.

He is working on his house training, and is perfectly happy to wear a belly band when he’s in the house.

He was the perfect angel getting his medicated bath and ears cleaned.

His toe nails are the easiest to cut since they are super white.

He hasn’t joined in the puggy piles, but I’m sure once he’s comfortable he will be a willing participant.

Thomas is searching for his perfect family that will spoil him rotten and love him unconditionally.

He deserves to be treated like a king.

Melvin is a 10 year old NAP (Not A Pug) and has had an extremely hard life.

He came in with a viral infection so had to stay at the clinic for over a week before he was able to come to his foster home.

Melvin has cherry eye and will need to have that fixed when he is neutered and had a skin issue that was pretty hard on his hair.

The bald spots are finally starting to fill in.

Melvin will also need eye drops for life.

He has been with me for several weeks now and he is growing more comfortable.

He really likes to be on the couch or on my lap.

He started showing interest in hooves but I had to put them up because he gets a little aggressive when another foster gets too close.

He gets along quite well with all the other fosters.

Melvin will have his procedures done soon and be ready to find a family that has the heart to open their home to such a sweet old guy that has never been loved or cared for.

Please Welcome Sherry to PugHearts!

Sherry is an 8 year old Pug Mix that came to PugHearts from a local shelter.

She was found as a stray with a broken leg and the shelter doctor did surgery to fix it.

She has healed fairly well and is only on a daily joint supplement to help with possible arthritis later on.

We’re not sure what Sherry is mixed with, but her wispy, wire coat make us believe there’s Terrier of some sort.

She has the most beautiful apricot coloring, perfectly lazy pug curly tail and a smile that lights up a room.

Sherry does well with other dogs, but would be perfect as the only child as well.

There’s not a mean or aggressive bone in her body and sometimes even the crazy little puppies can boss her around.

Sherry loves being outside laying in the sun, and will spend her mornings catching all the rays she can get.

Sherry is crate trained, and will go in on command of if she needs to get away from the excitement for a while.

She is house trained, and will go to the door waiting to be let out to do her business.

Sherry loves treats and is working hard on not taking off your finger in the process of getting one!

Nylabones and chew toys make her the happiest!

Sherry was spayed early on, and it appears she was really loved at one time, which makes her ending up as an injured stray in the shelter even sadder.

She is fully up to date on vaccines and is a healthy and happy little girl.

I know someone is out there wanting to give Sherry a home, and she deserves to be loved and spoiled, with plenty of couch cuddles and kisses!

Scottie (7469)
paw icon

Male

paw icon

1 years old

paw icon

No special needs

Scottie’s happiness is dependent on being with his people, and he has a strong fear of missing out which sometimes makes him seem a little neurotic, but in a cute way.

It has also come to our attention that he might suffer from only child syndrome as he is spoiled, a tad selfish, bossy, and a bit oversensitive, especially when you don’t prioritize holding him in your lap.

He will reluctantly, with a huff of disgust, settle for a spot on the couch or chair next to you, but a paw must be touching.

Scottie has impeccable potty manners.

He will ask out when needed, but a routine is best, and did I mention he does not try to mark in the house... bonus!

For a 18-month-old you would expect crazy energy levels, but Scottie is a pretty chill dog.

He can muster up as much energy as you want for a competitive game of tug-of-war, or a walk around the neighborhood, but he is perfectly content with a nap on the couch with his bestie.

Scottie luvs kids and will play chase with his human foster brother just as much as he wants!

Scottie’s other hobby includes TV watching, be warned he has opinions on what is on the screen.

He will voice his opinions, but don’t fret his voice more of an alto rather than a tenor.

Scottie moderately gets along with other dogs… I did mention the only child issue, right?

Think of it as a moody teenager who suddenly gets step siblings all up in their business, toys and chosen person.

Scottie would thrive as an only dog.

That being said, he does have a canine foster sibling and while we have had disagreements, foster mom runs a tight ship, so disagreements are short lived and talking back is not tolerated.

And his foster brother is equally guilty in the squabbles as he is grumpy, will not play, and doesn’t like to share his boy, all of which fuels the disagreements.

Scottie’s heart for his family is gigantic and he loves unconditionally.

This boy’s mission in life is to make his family know how lucky he feels to be a part of them, which will make anyone that chooses him the luckiest person/family in the world.

*18 months old, potty trained, will do stairs, will voluntarily -with a treat- go into crate at night and when people not home, great with kids, likes walks, bit of a picky eater, no meds except monthly Heartgard/Nexguard, seems to be good traveler.

Hi!

Meet Croissant, or Santi, for short.

He is a handsome 4 year old boy.

He’s got gorgeous soulful eyes!

He’s an active guy who loves to play with stuffed toys.

He is learning to be an inside dog, and that food will always be there so he doesn’t have to worry anymore.

He gets along with other dogs, but would do well as an only dog too.

He doesn’t mind cats either if they’re friendly!

He does well with crating, but also sleeps well in the bedroom too.

He is heartworm positive, so will need to go through treatment before going to his forever home.

That’s ok though, that gives him more time to get used to the good life!

If you’d like an active, funny family member, he is the guy for you!

Pruitt was found laying in a ditch trying to stay cool and get access to water before the July 4th holiday weekend.

The family that lived there brought him in immediately and started looking for his family.

After an exhaustive search, and even making an appointment to drop him off at the Pasadena Shelter, a family friend put them in contact with PugHearts.

We picked him up and immediately noticed he had an eye injury and struggled to breathe with Brachiocephalic Syndrome.

Pruitt went in for his intake and was scheduled for surgery the following day.

He had an enucleation (eye removal) his neuter, and then to help his breathing, he also had his nares, palate and saccules done.

The results are nothing short of amazing!

Pruitt can breathe!!!

Unfortunately, Pruitt is heartworm positive.

Luckily there’s no heart and lung changes, but it’s sad he wasn’t taken care of like he should have been.

He will go thru treatment and be heartworm free soon.

Pruitt is the most unique and beautiful coloring.

Breeders call this Sable, but I call it Super Smutty!

Pruitt is beautuful no matter what you call his coloring.

He’s definitely as sweet as he is gorgeous.

He loves big bed cuddles or snuggling in the dog bed with his foster siblings.

Pruitt is a singer and a talker.

That’s really what he does instead of barking and it’s pretty adorable.

He is going to make a family so happy that he chose them!

She has hip arthritis, but it doesn’t interfere with her mobility.

She has a mildly enlarged heart and does cough intermittently.

There is nothing wrong with her appetite, and she takes pills like a champ!

She gets along with the other dogs in the house.

I don’t know about cats.

She is such a sweet little lady.

I couldn’t help but fall in love with her.

She doesn’t really play with toys.

She is full of love, and would do better in a house with older or no children.

She would be perfect for someone that works from home.

She needs someone to hold her and love her unconditionally, and she will return that love.

Wallace was diagnosed with hepatic microdisplaysia which basically means his liver doesn’t have as many blood vessels as it should to filter his blood effectively.

For this reason, he is special needs and will need to be fed only prescription liver safe food from the vet, avoid certain medications, and have annual bloodwork to monitor his liver values.

Otherwise he lives a completely normal life!

He is also heartworm positive and will need to complete treatment for that as well before he is available for adoption.

We expect him to be ready in late 2023 or early 2024.

Cash (7568)
paw icon

Male

paw icon

11 years old

paw icon

No special needs

This handsome fellow comes to PugHearts as an owner surrender.

We're unsure of the situation or reasoning for him being surrendered, and nothing hurts my heart more than an elderly dog who's been in a home for it's entire life and is suddenly surrendered.

He was understandably confused at first, but he has now settled in beautifully at his foster home.

Given that he's such a regal gentleman, his foster parents actually call him Sir Cash at home!

When he first came to PugHearts he was overweight at about 28 pounds.

It visibly affected his mobility and breathing at times.

In the short 2 months he's been here he has lost nearly 3 pounds and feels amazing.

He has so much more energy, has learned to go up AND down the wooden stairs (a lot scary than carpeted stairs).

Then when you consider he has some vision impairment, it's even more impressive how much he's learned and the confidence he's gained.

Just the other night he hopped up onto the big bed without assistance for the first time!

The reason for his vision impairment is most likely due to dry eye (very common issue for pugs) that was left untreated.

He is now on daily eye drops that keep him comfortable and to help prevent any further damage.

You wouldn't know the he's 11, he's very mobile, curious and engaged with whatever's going on in the house.

But he still has that calmness that comes with age, and of course he can sleep like a champ.

He does great with the other pugs, basically just ignores them (even the annoying 1 year old foster).

He also totally ignores the adult cats and kittens fosters in his home.

Even when the kittens bat at his face, he either ignores or moves away like a good boy.

He's also basically deaf, but it's a huge plus if your house is loud for any reason, because he does not care.

Also a hug bonus during construction, fireworks and thunderstorms!

His foster family as learned how to communicate with him and he's adapted very well, no doubt he would adapt to a new home fairly easily.

He enjoys soft toys occasionally, anything flavored that he can chew on, but his absolute favorite are soft dog beds.

He will play with, suck on, stretch out and curl up with any soft bed he can find.

I swear I've caught him doing yoga (downward dog position) with these beds!

Health wise besides the dry eye he's great.

Heartworm negative, fully vaccinated.

He had some masses removed when he first came to the rescue, they were fully removed and have healed well.

He takes Benadryl twice a day just as a precaution, which he'll take with literally anything you offer (peanut butter, cheese, etc).

Overall just a very chill, snuggly boy.

He does great out at breweries, meeting new dogs, having a lot of new humans over.

Nothing really phases him, he just wants that people love.

*Bonus* He's a rockstar for any tongue-out photos!

I truly believe there's a family out there who will love and appreciate him, and we'll keep him safe until he finds them

Age: 4 Years Color: Black Weight: 13 Lbs Spayed - Yes Heartworm negative Joy is a black female who came to PugHearts from a breeder in the Rio Grande Valley.

She is extremely wary of humans and does not trust anyone without patience and time.

While originally considered almost feral, she has learned to trust those who she has spent time getting to know…her foster parents.

She seems attracted more to women than men.

She enjoys playing with other pugs and is gaining some social skills with other dogs.

From most people, she will run away and find a place where she cannot be captured easily.

If she trusts you, she will allow you to pick her up and give her attention.

When in a group of other dogs she will approach you if they do, but always stays just out of easy reach.

When sitting on the couch with others, she will get up on the couch with others and allow trusted people to pet her.

She is a work in progress.

She eats and sleeps in a crate, will go to her crate (but must be put into it) and is beginning to work on her potty skills.

Though she knows how to use a dog door and will sometimes go out on her own, she doesn’t always equate the dog door to where she needs to go to potty.. She is on eye drops for dry eye, which will need to be administered twice daily for the rest of her life.

She will slowly build trust with someone who becomes familiar over time with extreme patience.

Continue to follow her journey as we work with her to help her develop trust with people.

Irene (7609)

Introducing foster Irene.

This girl is estimated 6 years old and is 16 pounds of sweetness.

Unfortunately she seems to have had a rough / neglectful life thus far.

While we don't know her back story, she's obviously had several litters.

Given that she is middle age and just showed up randomly on the streets, it's probably a safe bet that she was discarded by a backyard breeder once she was no longer able to bear enough/healthy puppies.

This poor girl went from a home (we assume), to the streets, and is now in her 4th home, all in under 2 weeks.

She's understandably a little unnerved and just has a bit of nervousness/inability to settle.

I'm honestly impressed she isn't more scared, she's clearly a very resilient girl.

She will eventually settle (especially on the bed with you) and be all snuggled up next to your leg or arm.

She also loves anything that squeaks, but ESPECIALLY ball toys.

She seems house trained, no accidents the 6 days I had her, ignores the cats, accepts attention from anyone (even those smaller humans)!

Going back to her life of neglect, from her intake we learned that she is thankfully heartworm negative.

But she will need the following procedures; - Spay - Dental cleaning (her breath is horrendously impressive, my husband first thought it was bad gas, rather than her mouth) - Nares repair (to enlarge her nasal openings to help her breath better) - Soft palate resection (removing a small piece of her soft palate to open up her airway and help her breath better) - Removal of a (presumed) benign skin tag on a back leg Given that she needs so much corrected, this will be done over the course of two months with two separate sedations.

By the time she is medically ready for a home, I have no doubt she'll also be in a much better place emotionally.

Just another example of how PugHearts goes above and beyond for it's dogs.

I'm so proud to be part of this organization.

Stay tuned for her progress, and as always, anything you can give to help with the medical care of the 180 dogs currently in their care is greatly appreciated.

100% of donations go to the dogs, always. You're safe now sweet girl, and the road only gets better from here

Well I had taken this picture before work to post an update and say that Scarlett was recovering amazingly, but before I had time to post I got a call.

Let me just say that as a foster we typically never want to see Cindy’s name on our phone.

It’s usually not a good thing.

Today proved just that.

I received news that pathology had come back on Scarlett and it was not good news at all.

Scarlett has cancer.

Lymphoblastic Lymphoma is what it is.

At the moment I am still in shock that my precious 10 month old foster is sick, so I can’t tell you exactly what she has.

Only words I remember is aggressive and fatal.

P For now the course of action will be steroids and to let her be a puppy.

We will fight for her as long as she has fight in her.

But I could sure use some prayers.

These fosters not only come into our homes but into our hearts as well.

The thought of losing them sucks.

I’m at a loss right now, but please pray for Scarlett.

Scarlett is now hospice.

As soon as we saw the post that she was found and needed someone to go get her, the same volunteer jumped in the car and went.

They got to the house and she walked out of the garage and laid at their feet.

She was taken straight to the vet to be checked out.

Phantom is in the house.

He is so incredibly handsome!

He’s doing well with the pack.

He wants to play, but not with them.

He thinks I’m his new toy.

He’s a typical blind guy and has figured things out and is running around like he’s been here forever.

They never cease to amaze me with their adaptability.

He also has the most amazing head tilts, he may just be double jointed.

Phantom is 4 years old, sadly he’s heartworm positive.

Priya came to PugHearts with a significant flea allergy that was giving her skin issues, so she was seen at our vet and quickly improved with proper care.

She is about 4 years old and weighs 21 lbs.

She is energetic, playful, loves being with people, does great in the kennel and in the human bed.

She is learning to go into her kennel to eat, doing great with her housebreaking (no accidents!

), and she is learning how to seek attention in a calm manner.

This girl is smart and picks up routines and commands quickly.

She does want to be the boss, so no other alpha dogs in the house please.

She is just going to keep improving!

Please Welcome Milton to PugHearts!

Milton came in to his new foster home like a tornado and hasn’t stopped yet!

He is having a blast, and loves everyone.

He has literally gone thru all 500 toys and can’t seem to find which one he loves more.

Milton is 2 years old and all puppy.

He’s healthy and was recently neutered.

He is looking for an active family to call his own.

We are actively working on boundaries, rules and wearing this boy out.

Milton is definitely a “COVID DOG” meaning he was bred and bought during the pandemic and then he became too much after life went back to normal.

He needs some work but it’s clear this boy is going to be an AMAZING dog, and will make his forever family so very happy!

He sleeps well through the night and is working on his potty skills.

Drax was surrendered to PugHearts with three of his brothers and thankfully has his brother, Grimm, here with him!

Please Welcome Malach to PugHearts!

Malach made his way to PugHearts as a 12 week old owner surrender.

He had developed an eye ulcer and his family felt very overwhelmed.

After weeks of trying to save his eye with medicated ointment, we lost the battle and he went in for an enucleation or eye removal procedure.

He did well under anesthesia but was too young for his neuter and breathing surgeries.

Once his neuter is completed and boosters are done, Malach will be ready for his forever home.

Malach is all puppy.

He plays hard and cuddles harder.

He’s tiny and squishy, with a huge personality.

He has no fear and plays with the big dogs non stop.

Malach loves toys and is working on puppy manners.

He has so much fun running around the yard, and sleeps in the crate at night.

Like most pugs, he goes crazy for treats and at mealtimes, but being food motivated really helps with his training.

We discovered that Malach has dry eye, requiring daily drops to keep his eye healthy.

After some coaxing, he’s learned it’s not so bad and stays relatively still when I do it.

Malach will need a family willing to continue his training, and ready for the 14 plus year commitment.

Myrtle is an 8 year old girl that is AMAZING!!

I believe there is a sweet spot for pugs and she is smack dab in the middle of perfect!

She is agile and loves to jump up and lay on the back of the sofas and jump on the big bed at night.

She sleeps next to me all night curled up as tight as she can get next to me.

Myrtle is also extremely loving and cuddly.

She loves to give kisses.

Myrtle (BTW, I love her name) is extremely well behaved and has been since she walked through the door.

She isn't a big pack animal, she much prefers to stay out of the activity on the back of the couch or on the couch with me.

She would be fantastic for a quiet home that just wants to have a companion who adores them and never lets them out of her sight.

Every once in a while a foster clicks with something in me and Myrtle clicked.

She has been spayed and just needs to have her teeth cleaned and she will be actively searching for her family.

She is 6 years old and heartworm negative.

She’s happy to be out of the vet and loves being placed on the couch.

Now she’s just dreaming of her forever family.

We got some good news from the vet today!

Foster Aurora had a mast removed and today the report came back stating it is benign!

The vet does recommend that she take 1 benadryl twice daily for the rest of her life to reduce recurrence of mast cell tumors, but that is a small price to pay for this cutie.

Her weight is listed as 21 lbs but she does not feel that heavy to me.

She is also estimated to be 8 years old but she acts like a much younger pup.

Not to mention that gorgeous brindle coat!

Please welcome Caleb to PugHearts.

Foster Caleb is approximately 3. years old and came to PugHearts as an owner surrender through no fault of his own.

He is playful and a free spirit who enjoys playing with the other dogs in his foster home.

He also enjoys his down time too and loves to cuddle with his humans.

He has a sweet personality and can be quite fun and entertaining.

Caleb is crate trained and sleeps quietly all night long.

He gets along with all dogs; he has not been exposed to cats yet so we cannot determine if he’s ok around them.

Caleb would be fine around older children in the home, but we do advise monitoring around toddlers at first given his young age.

Caleb might be fine as an only dog but has not been assessed in an “only dog” environment since being in his foster home.

Meet Jerry.

9 yrs old.

He was taken to a shelter to be euthanized along with 9 other pugs after his dad passed away.

Jerry had his intake yesterday.

Jerry had a UTI and infection in both ears heartworm negative, he weighs about 18 lbs and could stand to gain a little weight.

He was given meds at the shelter, but threw up the meds and his food every time.

I’m happy to say changing his antibiotic worked, no throwing this one up?.

Jerry has only been here a couple of days, but let me tell you he is just wonderful.

Such a sweetheart.

Loves to be with people and cuddle.

He is great with all the other pugs.

He came to me with his 12 year old sister Juliet, who is blind, and He checks on her frequently.

I will post Juliet once she completes her intake.

Jerry is a picky eater currently.

And does not like the kibble, but we are working on mixing canned and kibble.

Meet Juliet 12 yrs old.

She was taken to a shelter to be euthanized, along with 9 other pugs, after their dad passed away.

Juliet has been blind since birth, due to underdeveloped, shrunken eyes.

Juliet is heartworm negative, had an upper respiratory infection, infection in both ears when came into PugHearts and has been treated.

She appears to have limited hearing and has arthritis.

She didn't move around much when got here, but with Rimadyl, Juliet is moving around more, but like most older pugs likes to nap.

In typical pug fashion, she loves her food, eats every bite and licks her bowl clean.

She is a very sweet girl.

Juliet doesn’t mind being picked up and held.

She came to my house with her brother Jerry who is 9, and has already been introduced.

Jerry checks on Juliet from time to time.

They nap together at times.

It was hard to get a photo of this blind, deaf, old gal, but was finally able to catch her smiling.

Juliet is looking for a calm home to spend her retirement years.

Gilbert (7757)

Please Welcome Gilbert to PugHearts!

Gilbert was picked up by BARC after being Hit By a Car.

PugHearts was called and our volunteers picked him up at the shelter to immediately transport him to Sugar Land Pet Hospital where he was seen by Dr. Hendrix.

Poor baby was on so many pain meds when he was transported that he could hardly move.

X-rays showed Gilbert suffered a left Ilium fracture.

Poor baby showed more deep pain than the majority of the pelvic fractures that I’ve seen.

Upon arrival in his foster home, poor Gilbert would scream in pain, and urinate when picked up.

We weren’t sure if it was swelling from his injuries, pain or just plain fear.

I’m happy to report that thankfully that subsided after a few days, but as I’m getting to know Gilbert, it’s clear someone was not good to him.

He gets nervous still when meeting new people, but cries and whines to get me to pick him up.

His appetite is typical pug strong, and while he heals, he’s getting 2 cups a day, which he loves!

Gilbert is still on strict rules of staying separated from the others.

One wrong move could shift his pelvis into dangerous territory, making eliminations impossible.

He loves the freedom of roaming the backyard, and he gets to share his time with his foster brother and fellow pelvic fracture Godrick.

They are enjoying their healing time together and spend their days with their pens set up right next to each other.

Gilbert had his intake and received all his vaccinations.

Thankfully, this poor boy caught a break and is heartworm negative.

He will be neutered and have follow up X-rays at that time to see how his pelvis is healing.

Callus typically forms in 3 months or so, and at that time he will be able to play with the others, and after awhile he will be cleared to adopt.

Gilbert is 4 years old, and a small boy, weighing in at about 16 pounds.

It’s sad to think his future started when he was hit by car, but it did, and it’s brighter than ever.

I have no doubt that Gilbert will make a complete recovery.

As with all my pelvic fractures, daily joint supplements for maintenance will be recommended.

He did well in the crate yesterday while I was working, and seems to love playing with the others.

Rudy is a little guy, about 14 pounds, but could stand to gain a few.

He has slept in the big bed since day 1 and is slowly understanding he can relax and take in all the love.

I can’t tell you much about his health, other than he feels like outside fur, and he definitely needs to be neutered and evaluated for breathing surgeries.

Outward appearance seems otherwise healthy, with the exception of possibly dry eye or allergies.

(See comments) He will have a NexGard today.

Once his intake is complete we will know more, but until then, it’s lots of cuddles as I get to know more about his personality.

Introducing PH Grant!

We have lovingly nicknamed him “honey bun” due to his beautiful honey-colored coat and his delightful corkscrew tail.

PH Grant has gotten along well with his foster pug siblings and loves to play tug a war and chase.

He loves people and snuggles up gently beside you.

He is 4 years old, 22 pounds and has a regal stature.

He is vision impaired but I would have never known had the vet not said so because he stares lovingly at the hoomans and finds his way around the house with no issues.

He will need daily eye drops.

He is crate trained and we have learned that when we can’t find him to look for him there because he likes to go in to his crate and rest.

Fluffy blankets are his favorite.

He has been wearing a belly band to avoid marking (although it turns out he has been taking the rap for his foster sibling) but with his recent neuter we are monitoring and taking him out for potty breaks with no problems.

PH Grant will be available for adoption following his heartworm treatment scheduled for March.

At 17 lbs and medium stature, this uniquely colored pug mix is a looker!

His coat is a latte color with white markings.

We're not sure what he's mixed with, but there's lots of speculation around Boston, boxer, or Frenchie.

Knox is one of the lucky ones from south Texas.

He was owner surrendered to a high kill shelter, but was plucked away just in time before he was to be euthanized.

This 4 year old boy still has lots of life and love to give.

He loves Nyla bones, he is learning routines quickly, is very loving, and he gets along well with other dogs.

He would do great in a home with kids, with other dogs, or as a solo companion.

He has a medium energy level, no health issues, (corneal scars but they don't require meds), and does well in a crate when needed.

Please welcome Foster Elwood to PugHearts!

I just picked up this boy from the clinic and he was super excited to be going to his Foster Home.

Elwood was found running around the Botanical Gardens in Houston and a Good Samaritan found him.

My client sent me a picture of her friend who had him and I sent to Erika.

We immediately got him and he had his intake.

I would have guessed he was a little younger but he is aged at 6 yrs old.

Unfortunately he is heartworm positive, and is on meds for hookworms and for dry eye.

He must of been loved once, because he is super sweet and seems like he never was a puppy since his energy is playful.

He will be ready in a couple of months but stay tuned for updates on this little boy.

Oh and did I mention his cute little teeth.

When he smiles it’s pure perfection!

Foster Mom says I’m just the most wonderful little guy and I’m a great cuddler.

I do love to snuggle and sit next to you and love getting belly rubs too.

I do walk wonky, they believe I had a neck injury at some time, but I don’t remember.

I can walk and run, just a little wonky.

I do require daily eye drops for my dry eye, and Rimadyl twice daily.

I do get along great with the pugs.

He loves cuddles and shows the occasional interest in toys.

He is crate trained and goes in on command.

House training has come along great.

He wears a belly band at night during big bed sleeping and is pad trained as well.

Pepe is a growler.

When he’s happy he has a little growl.

When he’s excited…he growls.

When he wants to play…growls.

He means absolutely no harm but a reactive dog might not like it.

It honestly doesn’t phase anyone here, but it’s worth noting!

Foster Farley, 5 years old, is such an incredibly good dog.

We were called when he kept being seen hanging around a shop in Houston.

When we picked him up, it was evident he had been on the streets for some time.

He was emaciated, had a poor coat full of fleas and many nicks in his ears.

I fully expected being a house dog would be a big adjustment for him but I couldn’t have been more wrong.

He is so obedient and looks at us with so much love and wisdom in his big round eyes.

Despite not being neutered yet, he never marked much and in the last few days his belly band has been completely dry.

He is respectful of our space, sweet to the dogs and humans who live here.

He is particularly fond of my little daughter who he thinks hung the moon.

He won't steal her snacks but she is known for distributing whatever she doesn't feel like eating and he will ever so gently accept the offer.

The perfect mixture of chill and playful, Farley will make someone incredibly happy once his heartworm treatment is completed, which should be in May.

Don't pass him up - he is worth the wait!

Hannah is a little under 2 years old and when she arrived she weighed 10 pounds.

However, she has a massive appetite and she has filled out nicely.

She arrived at PH with a broken jaw in early February 2024.

She underwent surgery to plate both sides of her jaw and has been on strict crate rest, no toys or chewies, and gruel type food since then.

Her first check up in mid February showed that the bones were beginning to heal and she goes in at the end of March for radiographs to evaluate the progress of healing.

Hannah is a trooper!!!

This young, energetic baby has been confined to her crate since February 5 with only potty breaks on a leash.

She has been such a good little girl and has not been any trouble at all.

If she is this great confined can you just image how awesome she is going to be when she's released to be a normal pug?

Her jaw will always be a little different and she will continuously be posed for Tongue out Tuesday photos.

Once her jaw is 100% healed she will have no restrictions on her eating or activities.

I have had several pugs with broken jaws and this has been true of them all.

In fact, I currently have a wonderful black boy, Zane, who had the same issue this time last year and he is 100% healed and the same will be true for Hannah.

Look for the news flash that Hannah has been cleared for adoption!

in the next few months and be first in what will be a long line of interested adopters.

She is definitely one to wait for!

He is epitome of a Velcro pug, if he could climb into your skin, he probably would!

He has perfect potty manners, and doesn’t mind the crate when we’re gone.

He prefers to sleep in the big bed, but likely would adjust to another arrangement.

He is spunky and likes to play with the others.

He’s very interested in our cat.

Doesn’t seem to want to hurt him, but kind of annoys him.

Felix is sweet and loving 3 year old boy.

He is playful and loves his toys.

His very favorite thing is his human.

He is a Velcro pug and will stay glued to your side for ever.

I think he will be a great only pug and would enjoy having you all to himself.

Felix didn't have a good life before he came to us.

He had an injury to his poor tail and it had to be amputated so he has a little nub.

He also didn't receive the care he deserved and has heartworms.

His beautiful black coat is bleached in places so he was outside way too much for a pug.

But he's a true pug and has the greatest outlook on life and he is learning everyday what it's like to be a pet.

He is working on his potty habits but since he will be here for several months we have plenty of time to fix that.

Felix will be ready in the June/July time frame and will be a fantastic addition to any family.

Stay tuned for updates as he begins his journey to a forever family!

Kelcie’s Bio (what I know so far, I’ll update when I know more).

Foster Kelcie is a playful, energetic one year old black female.

She is on the small side at only 11 lbs.

She plays well with our boxer and loves playing with toys.

She also loves to snuggle in any available lap when she’s ready for a nap!

Kelcie sleeps quietly in the kennel all night but lets us know she wants out in the morning as soon as she hears us get up.

We’re working on house training and walking on leash.

Kelcie is heartworm negative, but had pneumonia when she came to PugHearts.

She seems to be recovering well and judging by her energy level, I think she’s feeling a lot better.

Wendall is a super handsome and sweet 2 year old that came to us with Cliff, found by some Good Samaritans.

He was skinny and thankfully heartworm negative, but had two types of intestinal worms and a healthy dose of separation anxiety.

2 months in to his foster home, he has been neutered and had his nares and palate corrected as well.

He has decided playing with other dogs and toys are fun!

He is house trained, but is still very Velcro and needs to be with his people!

He doesn’t like the crate but does tolerate it if given a kong filled with a treat inside.

This hunk ‘o pug would do well in a home with other dogs, is definitely a submissive dog, and doesn’t seem to mind cats.

He is good with children and will bark for meat if you happen to be cooking or eating some.

He could be an only dog, but would do best with other dogs.

He loves sleeping in the big bed and is a snuggler.

Cliff is great in the car, does well with children and would be ok with cats as well.

He knows how to sit, he minds his manners, and loves toys.

One year old, heartworm negative, healthy, happy, confident, and so loving!

He is generally very chill and laid back, not much seems to bother him, and he loves to just cuddle and watch tv, which is almost unheard of in a one-year-old!!

He is just along for the ride; it is his whole vibe.

Will be ready soon after his upcoming neuter.

Please give a warm welcome to Francis, the newest member of PugHearts!

If you enjoy pondering about what a dog is thinking and appreciate an old soul, then he might be the perfect companion for you!

This pug is straightforward and simply desires to snuggle up next to his human on the couch without any disturbances.

He also enjoys leisurely walks outdoors from time to time.

Although he may initially come across as mellow like Eeyore, he absolutely adores cuddling and will bring a smile to your face.

Travis is crate and leash trained but is currently in the process of being potty trained.

He tolerates the energetic and playful young dogs in our household, but he may prefer a calmer environment.

We’ve found him to be very interested in our cats and he will chase them at times, but he is generally well-behaved.

Francis is 4 years old and has an apricot coat with a loose cinnamon tail.

He is heartworm positive (HW+) and will begin treatment in April.

Tango arrived here a few weeks ago so I have had some time to get to know him.

What I have found out is that he's a fantastic 2 year old pug!!

He is a super lover and just melts into my arms, and he's on the smaller side so he fits perfectly.

To say that he is uniquely handsome is an understatement, I just love looking at his cuteness!

Tango is in rough shape, he has scabs and hot spots everywhere.

There are a few places that look like he may have been bitten but I'm not sure.

His personality is such that he certainly wasn't the aggressor if that is what they are.

He is a very laid back and calm pug, especially for a 2 year old.

Sadly, but not surprising, Tango has heartworms.

He will be here for several months to get healthy and will have the time he needs to learn what life will be like from here on out and be ready to find his family in early summer.

Introducing Foster Mona!

This cutie pie is estimated to be about 2 years old, and based on her energy level, I'd say that's about right!

She is THE BEST pug fetch player I have ever seen!

We went to a dog park today, and a boy there threw a squeaky ball for her probably a dozen times, almost the full width of the small dog side of the park!

And she chased that ball down and brought it back, full-on Labrador Retriever style, over and over again!

Mona is already spayed but is heartworm positive and will need to undergo treatment for this, and she will also need a nose job, so she'll probably be ready for a furever home around June sometime.

Meet Atticus.

Atticus was found as a stray by Good Samaritans who contacted PugHearts after unsuccessfully finding his owners.

Atticus is feeling dumpy on his first foster day because I ground his talons, and he's not sure where he is or why he's here.

He has funky feet, as in very high front pinky toes that never contact the ground for any type of natural wear.

They were over 1/2" long.

So long they nearly curled into and punctured his paw pads.

Pedicure opinions mixed, but toe beans safer.

While the grinder is not his friend, we hope you'll be.

Atticus is also sad bc he is only 3 years old and heart worm positive.

Another case of easily preventable disease.

None of us knows the why.

But we know the how he will get better.

Atticus will receive love, proper care, and in some months, a family who never again lets him wander the streets, or become ill for lack of manageable monthly prevention.

Look for Atticus to be home ready early summer after his neuter and heart worm treatment.

This sweet, quiet, gentlest of boys deserves all the love.

Please Welcome Palmer to PugHearts This baby is in rough shape but is the sweetest thing.

He was found as a stray but we suspect we know who the family might be.

It’s clear that this didn’t happen overnight, and that is what we can see.

Palmer was picked up this evening by Melissa and she met me at my house when I got home from work.

He’s here because I have the ability to both medicate and quarantine this precious boy until his intake.

Palmer had a medicated bath with Pharmasab, a good meal, and was given both NexGard and prednisone.

NexGard to help with fleas and the suspected mange, and pred to help ease his discomfort.

He has a shirt on to help him with scratching and to keep him warm.

Palmer’s distended chest more than likely points to heartworms, which with the area he came from is not a surprise at all.

His breathing in the video suggests heart and lung changes, but X-rays will confirm that.

Conjunctivitis…more than likely dry eye, requiring drops for life.

He has a dark muzzle, making me think he’s not older than 3, which in the scheme of things would be in his favor because damage would be less.

Let’s hope that’s the case.

Palmer was failed by people.

My hope is that he made it to PugHearts in time.

He will more than likely be a long term foster while he tries to get well.

He is timid but wants love.

He was starving and couldn’t get enough water.

I hope he enjoys the warm bed and feels better in the morning.

Meet Stewart!

This cute little guy is 2 years old, and healthy.

He has a really great, balanced energy level.

He is playful, and will play and roughhouse (appropriately) with those who want to play with him.

He knows though when someone doesn’t want to, and so he doesn’t push it.

He’s doing well being crated when we’re gone, but does like to sleep in the big bed with his people.

He would easily adjust to crate sleeping if desired.

He is progressing well with house breaking.

He’s marking less & less inside, and this should improve even further once neutered.

He’s not been very interested in our cat, so he should be fine in a cat household.

Overall, Stewart is cute, fun, handsome little guy!

He will make a great family member!

Poppet is only 9 lbs and was surrendered to PugHearts because she wasn't allowed inside the home.

She spent most of her life tied to the porch, and unfortunately because of this treatment, she got heartworms.

Thankfully, her owner realized that that was no life for her and gave her to PugHearts where she is on the road to recovery.

Poppet has been spayed, had her nares done, and palette repaired.

She is now beginning her heartworm journey and will be ready for adoption in a few months.

This tiny girl likes to play a little, snuggle a lot, and can be a back talker when she doesn't get her way.

It all makes for some funny moments.

Foster Ciara, nursing six 3 week old puppies, along with three other adult pugs all found their way to PugHearts on St. Patrick’s Day.

Their living environment was of a hoarding situation and their elderly human had to move into a nursing home.

This sweet pug is the epitome of a velcro pug – she adores being by her human's side, whether it’s lounging at your feet or snuggled up next to you.

Ciara has the biggest playful spirit.

She loves toys and is always up for a game of fetch.

At around two years old, Ciara is still discovering the world and learning the ropes of being a cherished pet.

She’s making incredible progress with her potty training and understanding boundaries.

She gets along with other dogs and would also be wonderful with kids of any age.

As Ciara wraps up her responsibilities as a momma, she’s eagerly awaiting her chance to find her forever family.

Despite being a slow eater at 17 lbs, treats are her absolute favorite!

Her favorite game?

Fetch with squeaky toys, of course!

Although she's fine sleeping in a crate, her preference is to snuggle up close to her human.

She's ideally suited for a home where there's another energetic dog companion to keep her company and play with.

This is when they found out he had heartworms and so they decided to call PugHearts.

He is super sweet and full of cuddles to give.

He has learned the kennel and is doing very well with his house manners.

He loves the other pugs and is not bothered by the house cat.

Draco is 6 years old, heartworm positive and has dry eye.

His dry eye is not that bad, but he will require eye drops daily.

He takes them with ease!

He is scheduled to be neutered, and have his nares done so he can breathe better.

Meet Colleen.

This wee black nugget wandered into a local business on a random Monday, minus any ID or credit cards.

Luckily, humans there saved her the embarrassment of begging a ride or wallet, and called us.

An obvious pug mix (we're thinking Boston/pug) quite stinky, but ever so patient and sweet, even happy being chauffeured and bathed (thrice) by some weird new lady.

Colleen now smells fresh and is embracing foster life with the enthusiasm of a kid on Christmas morning.

Colleen luckily is negative for all parasites, but we are treating a UTI and some ear crud.

Overall, not a bad report for a street dog.

She is estimated to be 8 years old and couldn't weigh more than 13#.

She is an absolute model houseguest; sleeps quietly crated; pleasant to the many other bossy pugs here; loves to be (and probably lived) outside.

She has a crazy short, single coat; heaven to maintain, and likely will yield very little shedding.

Over a month later, and just a week to home ready, this dumped darling continues to thrive.

She arrived with an antibiotic unresponsive UTI, which led us to find and remove a bladder stone.

Colleen was also spayed at that surgery and had airway augmentation for better breathing and longevity.

She will need to eat only urinary Rx food for life.

This dog greets me with such gratitude each day.

Meet Finneas, a vibrant, seven-year-old male bursting with health and charm.

Despite being an owner surrender, his impeccable house manners showcase his ability to fit into any family.

A playful spirit, Finneas is known for his endearing signature move—his tongue perpetually poking out.

While we advocate for crate training at PugHearts, Finneas will thrive in a home where bedtime is a family affair.

He prefers to sleep in bed with his pack.

He adores cuddling under covers, promising not to monopolize the bed space.

Seeking companionship, he craves the company of other furry siblings and prefers playtime with fellow canines while maintaining a harmonious relationship with feline pals.

He will be a lousy guard dog because he greats all humans with a wag of his perfect cinnamon bun tail.

If you need protection from those evil neighborhood squirrels then Finneas is your man!

A seasoned traveler, Finneas revels in car rides.

He loves to give kisses during snuggles and scratches.

He is generally very chill and he loves to snuggle while you watch TV.

He is a great listener because he tilts his head so he can capture every word with his velvet ears.

He will be your shadow and your best friend in the whole world.

Cowboy has bounced around quite a bit, and I can't understand why other than he is a typical puppy who does typical puppy things like eats any and everything, play bites, runs from you when he gets into something he shouldn't, and wanting to be in the thick of things.

He's 12 months and just wants to have fun!

He came from a shelter where he was dumped, adopted by a family who gave him 2 days to adjust in their home, and then called us saying he was too much.

Since being in his foster home and being allowed to decompress and learn our routines, he is doing great.

He plays a lot, he gets into everything, and he loves everyone.

His ideal owner needs to be patient, consistent, and understanding.

He needs to be watched like a toddler.

An active home with another playful dog or one with kids would be best.

He is healthy, but is flat footed due to living in a wire cage and possibly poor nutrition.

It doesn't effect him in any way.

Susan: A tail (lol) of a not quite bilingual pug.

Susan is an owner surrender from a family that exclusively speaks Vietnamese at home.

I picked up Susan a week and a half ago.

I really didn't think anything of it at the time.

When I picked her up from SLPH later that evening, all I had was an anxious, extremely overweight pug who incessantly walked in circles and panted like she had just run a marathon through the Sahara.

I was also a little surprised that this 2-year-old girl knew zero commands.

About day three, it occurred to me that she probably did, but not in English.

I reached out to a friend and asked her to teach me basic commands like sit, stay, come, and good girl, etc.

The first time I told her to sit in Vietnamese, she sat right down.

I figure while she's learning English, I can learn Vietnamese and it will be a win-win for both of us.

If you are looking for a bilingual pug, with whom to practice your Vietnamese, I've got your girl.

Please Welcome Fielder to PugHearts!

Fielder made his way to PugHearts from a local shelter that does absolutely everything when it comes to finding their dogs home, but sadly Fielder was a stray, meaning he was more than likely dumped.

It’s heartbreaking and so hard to understand, but Fielder is one of the lucky ones, surviving the streets and making his way to the best rescue ever!

Fielder is gorgeous with piercing brown eyes and the softest white, single coated fur.

Fielder is 18 months old and sadly he’s heartworm positive with an enlarged heart from said heartworms.

We’re confident that we can fix that, but at 18 months old, it really is infuriating.

Fielder weighs about 16 pounds and could stand to gain a pound or two.

He is learning quickly about rules and structure and I’m already so proud at how far he’s come.

He does well with other dogs and is really starting to play like the puppy he was meant to be.

He will need to be neutered and have any breathing surgeries, before his heartworm treatment.

Fielder will be ready in early July but he is more than happy to add pending to his name right now!

Watch out!

Shoe thief on the loose!

Taffy is a funny 5 year-old girl who is heartworm negative and weighs in at about 20 pounds.

Her signature mittens on her front paws are so unique it makes sense she wants shoes to wear.

Her little underbite is precious and on occasion, we catch her with her tongue out.

Taffy lives with two pugs and a big shepherd.

She enjoys their company and is playful with the younger one and gives space to the older two.

She loves to dance around the house with a shoe in her mouth when she is excited.

She enjoys watching for squirrels and Amazon drivers while I work, she loves giving kisses and she always wants to be near her family.

Her human family consists of Mom, Dad, and two boys, ages 6 and 13.

She has settled in and taken to us all.

Taffy is potty trained and crate trained.

She has no food aggression but prefers to eat her rawhides alone.

She can navigate stairs well (usually skipping to every other one) and can hop up onto our couch and parkour off the pillows.

Taffy is so curious about the goings-on of a household.

Where did mom go off to in that rain box in the house?

Why is dad in that tiny room with a fan on?

What's this bedtime story stuff?

Not sure what her story was before, Taffy gets very excited to sit on your lap and it takes a couple minutes for her to settle down.

But when she does, she is out like a light.

A little snore here and there, a little toof sticking out makes her the cutest little butterball you could ever imagine.

Taffy's perfect home is filled with love and attention.

She'd be amazing with or without other dogs and I believe she would take to the children like a mother and silly side-kick (much like she's done here in our home).

Taffy has no health issues and is ready for her forever home.

We’re working on healing some skin issues from living on the streets for a bit, but other than that he’s healthy.

If you’re looking for a sweet, calm companion, don’t overlook this guy.

He is a lovely boy!

Please give a warm welcome to PugHearts’ newest heartthrob, Timothy!

Timothy was surrendered at no fault of his own, but rather due to severe allergies in his previous home.

He has been the perfect houseguest since coming to us and has absolutely loved everyone he has met so far!

This sweet boy has the most adorable face and the cutest little legs!

Timothy is only 3 years old, he’s heathy, and he’s ready to find his new forever family!

So welcome to PugHearts, sweet Timothy, we are so glad you are here!

Penelope is an 8 year old who was surrendered with her brother Stitch when her owner could no longer care for them.

She is a bit nervous in her new surroundings, but already shows her love for toys and playing with our other dogs.

she likes to follow her people around, but prefers to sit next to you rather than in your lap.

We are having a lot of fun watching her come out of her shell and can’t wait to see her personality blossom!

Foster Gerald is 10 years old, stunning, completely healthy and adoption ready.

He comes to us due to no fault of his own, just a difficult family situation.

Gerald is in great health and on no medications.

He can jump on the couch, is very playful and he is so sweet that his friendly nature was even noted by the vet.

Gerald is a a velcro pug who will follow you everywhere but at the same time, he can be trusted when left at home because he is not anxious.

He just curls up in a dog bed and waits for you to come home so he can follow you some more.

I could honestly sit here and write a novel about how great this dog is in every aspect - sleeps through the night, potty trained, friendly with people and other dogs, totally young in spirit and so precious with his sweet eyes, dark coloring and intense wrinkles even on his back.

Bottom line is, he deserves nothing but happiness for the rest of his life because that is all he puts out into the world and I hope that someone picks this wonderful boy to be a part of their family.

Introducing Foster Presley…this adorable little gal is only about 18 months old and only about 15 pounds.

She has some skin issues, but we are already working on that.

She’s already a beauty even with her issues.

I can’t wait to see her coat as it gets healthier.

The lone survivor of Angel’s 5 babies, Cael is still hanging in there.

I checked on him throughout the night and always saw him nursing but when I weighed him this morning, he had lost weight.

I checked Angel and I couldn’t get any milk to come out of her teats so I immediately started feeding him again.

I am doing the syringe method for two reasons.

1.

He drinks too fast and the milk comes out of his nose.

The syringe slows him down.

2.

I can get a better idea of how much he is eating during feedings.

Angel is co-parenting with me.

She cleans him and takes care of his potty needs.

She also snuggles with him.

We are a team and we are fighting for this baby to make it.

Rocky (4 yrs old and heartworm negative) does SO good with all the dogs and people!

I watched him running in the yard at an event, stopped for some kids to pet him, then continued running.

He's finally starting to settle in her and show us a little more of his personality.

~ He really is excellent with other animals (dogs & cats).

~ His favorite thing is soft toys, but he plays gently with them.

~ Completely house trained ~ Knows 'sit' and is working coming when called Overall he's a very easy going, well behaved boy.

Will be ready after heartworm treatment this summer.

Please Welcome Jarek to PugHearts!

Jarek was found roaming around a neighborhood in Harris County.

Luckily he walked right up to some dog lovers doing yard work, who also happened to teach with one of our long time volunteers, so after going door to door, PugHearts was called.

Jarek was named for the God of Spring.

He’s a gorgeous, smutty big headed boy weighing about 16 pounds, with a little room to gain a pound or 2.

He adapted so well and was feeling right at home on night one.

Jarek had his intake exam with the vet and I’m excited to report that he’s heartworm negative, and besides needing his neuter and breathing surgeries, Jarek is a healthy happy dog.

Jarek would make an excellent addition to any home.

He’s crate trained and has been working hard in house training and doing so good.

Jarek loves other dogs and is happy to play or to snuggle.

He’s 100% Velcro and adored his people.

Jarek’s happy-go-lucky personality and adorable smile will make everyone’s day!

Intake #5000 for PugHearts!

Allow me to introduce Masaru, the 5000th dog rescued by PugHearts!

We knew he needed a very special name for this very special boy.

Masaru has Japanese origins meaning VICTORY, and that’s exactly what Masaru is to PugHearts!

17 years of being victorious, and rescuing pugs, pug mixes and a few others that snuck in along the way.

Masaru came from the Pasadena Shelter as a stray and is aged around 4 years old.

He has an old eye injury that left a scar, some loud breathing that will be corrected with surgery and sadly he’s heartworm positive too.

Masaru has the perfectly squishy and round pug body with the cutest smile and the absolute best tail curl!

He has acclimated well, loving everyone here and even found his perfect spot in the big bed last night.

Masaru will have his official intake this week, but my goodness…how special is number 5000!
